Anmeldung week without the scramble
Your first week in Germany should not be a scavenger hunt. Sequence the tasks that unlock other tasks — then protect sleep.
Anmeldung (address registration) sits near the center of German adult life: banking, insurance letters, and sometimes employer HR all lean on it. Cities differ in appointment scarcity. Plan as if slots are scarce; celebrate if they are not.
Before you fly
Confirm who can sign the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (landlord confirmation). Temporary hosts sometimes hesitate — clarify this in writing before you land. Photograph your passport and contract into an offline folder.
Day 0–1: keys, sleep, groceries
Do not book Bürgeramt hopes for the afternoon you land. Get keys, test the stove, buy water and simple food, set an alarm that respects your origin time zone. Exhausted people lose documents.
Day 2–4: registration attempt
Attend the appointment with originals and copies. If you are waitlisted, ask HR whether a temporary employer letter helps for onboarding meanwhile — some companies have interim processes; many do not.
Day 5–7: only the dependent tasks
Open the bank account that required Anmeldung, trigger insurance correspondence, and update payroll address fields. Delay non-critical shopping and social plans until these move.
