Choosing a city after the offer is signed

HQ address is a starting coordinate, not a sentence. Still, trains and school districts will edit your idealism.

Train approaching a European station platform

Some offers require presence at a specific site five days a week. Others allow hybrid patterns that open neighboring cities. Read the attendance expectation before you fall in love with a skyline photo.

Commute tolerance as a number

Pick a maximum door-to-desk time on a bad weather day — not the optimistic Google Maps version. If that number is 55 minutes, several suburbs enter play; if it is 25, your housing search narrows fast and should start earlier.

Partner and family gravity

A trailing partner’s industry cluster may matter more than your café preferences. Name that trade-off early. Household moves fail quietly when one adult’s career is treated as a footnote.

Use a temporary city on purpose

Spending month one near the office while you learn actual commute pain is rational, not indecisive. Just budget the double move: boxes, deposits, and emotional energy.

Municipality friction differs

Appointment scarcity, international school waitlists, and rental competition are uneven across Germany. Factor process friction alongside rent per square meter.
